GMC Astro "Hot Rod"

Got this off ebay(in canada)in august 2004 for $40us
It arrived in pieces(not as many as in the 1st pic!)and the paint was very thin & blotchy, pictures can be deceiving as it looked very nice!

This it what it looked like after 2 weeks in Mr.Muscle oven cleaner!
It took a lot longer to clean the paint off than i thought it would.

I opened up the doors and hinged them "suicide" style & also altered the interior tub removing the "inner door panel".
It was my first attempt at hinging doors & as much as i tried i could not get them to work

I lowered the front & rear suspension
the rear was lowered by cutting out a section from the leaves and then re-gluing
original on the left, modified on the right

the front was lowered by notching the rear hanger bracket and then moving it up the chassis rail
i also removed the bottom 2 leaves
modified on the left, original on the right

this is the original front spring fitted

and this is the modified one fitted
the section under the red line has been removed

the original cab mounts were broken so i took the opportunity to lower them as well by placing them on top pf the chassis rail

I flocked the interior and cut up some dashboard decals for the dials & placed BMF under the floor

and what hot rod is complete without a set of furry dice :D

i had to modify the cab tilt pins & rear cab mounts as the ones i made earlier were wrong.
also my son knocked the cab off the modelling table on toothe tiled floor and broke the two front cab corners(luckily i fixed them ok!)

the wheels & rear "blue dot" lights are from a 1/24th Jada VW slide back diecast model

Have a look in the "Bildergalerie" for the finished truck.

Hello Liam!

Whow! Your project of an hot-rod-style-truck is an great idea! :ok:

The flocked interior is really authentic. Wich material you used for it? Also I´m interested, how you lost the old color and cleaned up the parts? Please, let us know it! :pc:

Hi Barbara,
thank you for the nice words :)

the flocking for the interior is from Model Car Garage(black) https://www.modelcargarage.com/ & Detail Master(red) https://www.detailmaster.com/

to remove the old paint i use a product called "Mr. Muscle Oven Cleaner"
it is also very good for removing the chrome from kit parts(fuel/air tanks etc..)

just spray it on and place in a container with lid(old ice cream tub is good)and leave it for a couple of days and then wash the parts in dishwashing liquid and scrub with an old toothbrush

this is very good on the Humbrol/Revell enamel paints but not so good on automotive paints(it can take 2-3 times in the oven cleaner to get this paint off)

i also have used brake fluid to clean the old paint off but you have to be carefull not to leave it too long or it might damage the plastic

and thank you also to Keri for the nice words :)

i think my skills are not yet good enough to chop the roof :(

maybe next time :D
